Houston and the Rice Community

Rice is located about three miles from the downtown area of Houston. The campus is a 300-acre academic park shaded by almost 4,000 live oaks and pines and campus architecture is styled along an elegant Mediterranean theme, bordered by tall hedges and a three-mile jogging trail. The overall environment is pleasant and attractive. The Texas Medical Center, the world's largest medical complex, is across the street.

The Texas Medical Center

Among the over 40 institutions present are Baylor College of Medicine, the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Texas A&M Institute of Biosciences and Technology, the USDA Nutrition Center for Children and a host of hospitals and other educational, clinical, and research facilities. The Rice community maintains close ties with the Medical Center through research collaboration and cooperative educational programs.

Hermann Park is also just across the street, located just north of the Texas Medical Center, containing the Houston Zoo, the Houston Museum of Natural Science, and the McGovern Centennial Gardens, along with a golf course, walking and jogging trails, and an amphitheater. Galveston Island, on the Gulf of Mexico, is a forty-minute drive from the campus, and the Big Thicket National Wilderness Preserve is only two hours away. Houston is served by two airports including major hub status with Continental Airlines and Southwest Airlines. Multiple daily non-stop flights to a wide range of domestic and international destinations are available.
